I am two weeks out from welcoming Baby #4 to our Family and I can't wait!!! This entire pregnancy I have been planning on having a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). I have a GREAT Dr. and she was on board and happy with my decision to VBAC, especially considering my first two were Vaginal Births. #3 was a C-section because she was in a transverse position. Than at my 36 week appointment she got the paperwork from my previous Dr. who did my C-section and turns she only did one set of sutures instead of two because the lining of my Uterus was very thin. So after lots of praying and talking to my husband we decided an elective C-section was what I needed to do. I was disappointed and even cried on the phone to my husband and mother when I called them after my appointment to tell them. No I am good with it and know it is the right decision! So in two weeks we will get to welcome our newest little man into our family!
This is my fourth baby so I pretty much KNOW what I need for the hospital! My Original list included things to have for the Labor & Delivery which I will now not need (I actually had this bag packed and ready to go). This is my What to Pack for a C-section list! It is pretty much the same things you will need for recovery as with a vaginal birth.
For Mom!
Books or magazines: You may end up not using them but with a C-section you will be in the hospital for 3 days so take them just in case you want something to do!
Camera: I suggest having DH take this in with you and not putting it in your bag, you'll want him to take pictures especially of that hour your in recovery where the weigh baby, clean him up etc.!
PJ's/Nursing PJ's/ Skirt: I don't have nursing PJ's in the picture because I am not sure if I am going to go with PJ's or a night gown (Still have to pick that up this week). They will be coming in and checking out your incision a lot! That is why a friend suggested a skirt. This one has a really wide waist. You will want something super comfy that will go high so it is above your incision. I will probably stay in the hospital gown the first day and then decided. So just be prepared you don't know what is going to feel best.
Some people like to pack a going home outfit. For me after a C-section I am just going to go home in PJ's because once I get home I'll be changing into them anyways. So you decide.
Phone charger
Flip flops: I went and got these at the dollar tree. So guy buy a cheap pair to use when you take a shower.
Slippers
Toiletries: Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, deodorant, face-wash, body wash, tooth-paste & toothbrush, Brush/comb, lanolin/nipple cream, make-up.
Trash bag: For taking dirty clothes home in.
Pre-natals: The hospital will most likely give these to you if you ask, but I decided to take them so I could have the same ones I've been taking for the pregnancy.
Underwear: Now this one is up to you. I am not taking them because I always use the very fashionable mesh ones they give you at the hospital. Anything you use is going to get bloody. That's right even with a C-section your going to bleed, it will probably be less but sorry it's still going to happen.
For Baby!
Going home outfit/Picture outfit: I just decided to use the same outfit for both, less to pack! You wont want to take more outfits then that there is just no need for them.
2 Onsies: Just in case you want to put baby in something besides the hospital shirt.
Socks
Mittens: So they don't scratch themselves, or you.
Hats: I'm taking two again just for something different then the one you get at the hospital.
Swaddle Blanket: You don't really need this I just like to have one cute one!
Nursing Pillow
Nursing cover
File & Clippers: Baby's a lot of time come out with long nails.
Car seat: Install before you leave but leave in the car until it is time to go home.
For Dad!
Snacks: You might want some too for late at night when your up feeding baby, and just to have some stuff you like there. Remember your going to be there 3 days!
A roll of quarters for vending machine
Cell phone charger
If he is staying at the hospital with you pack PJ's, change of clothes (2 or 3), and his toiletries.
Have everything ready to go and by the door!
Trust me this is all you will need! I have done this 4 times and anything else you wont use! You may want to take you I-pad/Kindle/lap top if you have one to keep you busy, but everything else leave at home.
The hospital will provide you with everything you need for recovery such as pads etc. My hospital give you an abdominal binder after a C-section and it is a LIFE SAVER! Check with your hospital if they don't have the GET ONE! They also provide diapers, wipes, and everything like that you will need for baby!
Anything left in baby's bassinet when it is time to go home take with you! I will also be doing a post on what to take from the hospital so be looking for that!
Good luck mama's welcoming your new baby's earth-side!
